Activities
We are happy to help you with your plans for the day and to advise you regarding excellent walks, scenic drives and other local attractions. Among the activities we can arrange for you are boat trips, kayaking, mountaineering, climbing, abseiling, guided walks, fly fishing, cycling, pony trekking, whale watching, falconry and stalking. We are also very happy to assist if there is anything else you would like to arrange.
Most activities need to be arranged at a least a day before but we can always try and help at shorter notice.
Further details of the most popular activities appear under their own headings below.
| Boat Trips | Shieldaig will shortly have its own wildlife boat trips. Further details will follow when these are operational. |
| Birdwatching | We have a bird watching scope and binoculars, which we are happy to lend to guests and there are books on Scottish birds on the bookshelves in the Residents' Bar. Two Sea Eagles are presently resident on the island in front of the hotel and many other birds and divers can be seen from our windows. |
| Cycling | Bicycles can be hired locally and there are some fantastic mountain biking routes in the area. |
| Fishing | Fly-fishing on Loch Maree (with rod hire, boat, gillie, etc) can be arranged subject to availability. We can also usually arrange similar fishing in Loch Damph. We will require notice for both of these. If you have your own rods we can recommend some local lochs for brown trout. There is now also excellent fishing on the river Carron (catch and release) and we can organise day tickets. We can also usually organise sea fishing but may need some notice for this. If you catch anything we are always happy to refrigerate or freeze it for you - or even better to cook it for your meal. |
| Hiking/Climbing | The Torridon hills provide some of the best climbing and walking in Scotland and are suitable for people of all abilities to explore. If you want advice on the various walks in the area we will be happy to help. [Click to my Favourite Walks]. There are also plenty of walk books in the hotels' sitting rooms. We can organise guided climbs and walks with fully trained mountain guides with some prior notice. |
| Kayaking | We have one kayak (more are ordered for the summer). Kayaks must not be taken out of Loch Shieldaig (the part of Loch Torridon by the hotel). Guests may also ask to take them for the day to use on inland lochs. Please note that they should only be used on calm days by experienced kayakers or in very shallow water for beginners - they may (and often do!) tip. Use of a life jacket is mandatory Kayak instructor and hire can also be organised on prior notice. |
| Stalking | During the season stalking can be organised on request. |
